Illegal practice in veterinary medicine and animal welfare: Report of removal of remaining ovary in a female cat

Ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) is a complication that occurs when fragments of ovarian tissue are not completely removed during an ovariohysterectomy, allowing continued hormone production and causing the animal to exhibit signs of estrus. This case report describes an instance of ORS in a cat that underwent a spaying procedure performed by an unqualified individual, highlighting the serious implications of illegal veterinary practice. The patient, a 2-year and 9-month-old female cat was referred to the veterinary clinic showing signs of estrus and excitation behavior despite being spayed. Clinical examination revealed normal parameters, and abdominal ultrasonography detected structures compatible with remnant ovarian tissue. Consequently, a corrective ovariectomy was performed, with the complete removal of the functional tissue located in the right ovary. The patient then underwent corrective surgery performed by a qualified veterinarian to ensure the complete removal of the residual ovarian tissue. The postoperative period was uneventful, and estrus signs ceased after the procedure. This study highlights the risks associated with illegal veterinary practice, particularly in surgical procedures such as spaying, which require technical knowledge and proper training. The lack of adequate qualification not only compromises animal welfare but also poses risks to public health. This case reinforces the importance of strict regulations and awareness campaigns to warn pet owners about the dangers of relying on unlicensed individuals for their animals' healthcare.
