The initial development of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings depends directly on the physicochemical properties of the substrates used in the nursery phase. This study evaluated the performance of seedlings of the yellow cultivar SF 134 in four substrate formulations: T1 (100% coconut fiber), T2 (100% sugarcane bagasse), T3 (vermiculite + sugarcane bagasse 1:1), and T4 (vermiculite + sugarcane bagasse 2:1). The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with five replications per treatment. The variables analyzed were shoot length (SLL), root length (RL), total fresh mass (TFM), and stem diameter (SD). The results indicated that substrate T1 promoted the best root development, showing a significant difference compared to T2, which showed inferior performance. The mixtures containing vermiculite (T3 and T4) showed intermediate performance, attenuating the negative effects of pure sugarcane bagasse. The other variables did not differ statistically between treatments, indicating stability of morphological characteristics in the initial phase. It is concluded that coconut fiber is the most efficient substrate for the production of vigorous seedlings, while sugarcane bagasse requires structuring materials to optimize its use.
