Resumo

Autoimmune diseases have shown significant global growth and already affect millions of people, directly contributing to the loss of quality of life of affected patients, being characterized by the recruitment and activation of neutrophils (NE), whose characteristic cellular effector mechanisms culminate in tissue damage and chronicity of the condition. This qualitative narrative review was conducted to synthesize evidence on natural compounds with immunomodulatory potential on NE, with emphasis on mechanisms of action relevant to the treatment and understanding of autoimmune pathogenesis. The identified studies demonstrate that several natural compounds identified in the review reduce neutrophilic activation through mechanisms such as inhibition of chemotaxis, suppression of ROS, blockade of Ca²⁺ influx, modulation of NF-κB, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inhibition of NET formation. It is concluded that natural compounds represent promising adjuvant strategies for the control of neutrophilic inflammation, potentially contributing to safer and more effective therapeutic approaches. Future clinical application depends on further experimental studies and clinical trials confirming efficacy, safety, and ideal dosage.
