Abstract

The Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse biomes in the world and, at the same time, one of the most impacted for the conversion of native areas into agricultural environments. One alternative for these ecosystems is to convert them into restored areas. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of diferente restoration techniques in a Cerrado area in the municipality of Monte Carmelo (MG). A demonstration unit was installed with three treatments: natural regeneration (control), direct sowing, and seedling planting. Ground cover, stem density, and seedling growth were evaluated. At six months, direct seeding showed greater soil cover and higher stem density (29.78 stems/m²), with a predominance of Canavalia ensiformis and Cajanus cajan. The planting of seedlings showed a survival rate of 88.88%, indicating good establishment of the species in the area under restoration. After six months of planting, the greatest average height increases were observed in Anadenanthera macrocarpa (43.3 cm) and Cedrela fissilis (29.6 cm). After a year of monitoring, the average height of Anadenanthera macrocarpa seedlings reached 67.66 cm, while Cedrela fissilis showed more significant growth, reaching an average height of 163.66 cm. Natural regeneration was dominated by exotic grasses. The results indicate that the techniques are complementary and that integrating methods can enhance the restoration of degraded areas in the Cerrado.
