Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) is a plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family and native to Southeast Asia. This species has been cultivated in the world for food and medicinal purposes. In Brazil, the fruits are still little known and underused. The main form of consumption of the fruits is the “in natura”. The fruits have been identified as having excellent added value due to their differentiated physicochemical composition and other attributes with significant quality and functional potential. The current literature reports appreciable amounts of soluble solids, ascorbic acid and minerals present in the fruits, which makes them even more valuable as a nutraceutical food and for medicinal purposes. Even with the wide use of fruits in the world, the amount of information related to physicochemical, proximate composition, minerals and vitamins characterization is still incipient or scarce, which justifies the importance of this review. It is also worth mentioning the direction and conduction of new studies regarding the quality attributes of the species and especially its fruits in order to better understand and detail the possible benefits aimed at the well-being and promotion of human health. As a species of great socioeconomic expression in the world, it is also important to highlight the attention given to the fruits, aiming at increasing their market potential and focusing on the diversification of the offer to consumers.
