Epidemiological analysis of deaths from inflammatory disease of the female pelvic organs in Brazil between 2013 and 2022

Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a syndrome that predominantly affects women of reproductive age and can cause chronic pelvic pain and infertility. The objective of the present study was to carry out an epidemiological survey of PID deaths reported in Brazil. Ecological, time series, quantitative and descriptive study with data from DATASUS between 2013 and 2022. The following variables were collected: ethnicity, age group, place of death, state of occurrence and cause according to the ICD (N70 to N77) . During the period studied, 2163 women died due to some type of PID. The majority (51.2%) were between 50 and 79 years old. The hospital environment was where 90.8% of cases occurred. Regarding skin color, white women were the most affected (46.4%). There was a record in all Brazilian states, with 16 of them showing an increasing rate. The mortality rate due to PID in the country was 1.06 deaths per thousand inhabitants in Brazil and in 10 states the rate was higher than the national rate. Regarding the cause, the data revealed that the largest number of deaths (853) was due to “N73 - Other Female Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases”, which represented 39.5% of the total. It was possible to note that 77.4% of deaths were reported in CIDs whose name includes the word “other” or “unspecified”, which raises concerns regarding the correct diagnosis used.
