Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a legume of great socioeconomic and nutritional importance, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. Seedling quality directly influences crop performance, with substrate being one of the main factors determining germination and initial growth. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the initial growth of cowpea seedlings in different substrates formulated from agro-industrial waste. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four treatments: T1 – sugarcane bagasse; T2 – sugarcane bagasse + vermiculite; T3 – sugarcane bagasse + coconut coir; and T4 – coconut coir + vermiculite, with ten replicates each. Twenty-one days after sowing, shoot and root length, stem diameter, fresh weight, and leaf number were evaluated. The results revealed significant differences between the substrates, particularly T3 and T4, which promoted greater shoot and root growth, as well as greater biomass accumulation. Sugarcane bagasse, alone or in combination with vermiculite, performed worse. It is concluded that the use of coconut coir, especially in combination with vermiculite, represents a better alternative for cowpea seedling production.
