Investigation of hospitalizations for Hypertension in Brazil: Data analysis from DATASUS, 2012-2022.

Aimed to analyze the cost and average length of hospitalizations due to arterial hypertension in Brazil from 2012 to 2022. Cross-sectional study using data from the Hospital Information System of the Brazilian Unified Health System (DATASUS), adjusted by the IPCA. Variables included average hospital stay, total and average cost, stratified by region, age group, and sex. There was a 4.65% reduction in the average length of stay and a 64.19% decrease in total costs. São Paulo had the highest total expenditure, while the Southeast and Northeast regions showed the highest total and average hospitalization costs. Older adults had longer average stays, and women accounted for most hospitalizations, although men had higher average costs per admission. Hospitalizations among youth, although rare, showed high average costs. In conclusion Regional inequalities persist. Findings highlight the need to strengthen primary care and implement preventive strategies to reduce hospitalizations related to hypertension.
