Abstract

Adolescence is considered a critical period for the development of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to various hormonal and behavioral changes that can influence an individual's cardiovascular health. One of the main risk factors for the development of CVD is systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), with a prevalence ranging from 1% to 10% among adolescents, depending on the region. This condition can worsen when associated with viral infections, such as those caused by cytomegalovirus. Thus, our aim was to investigate the association between cytomegalovirus infection, blood pressure alterations, and oxidative stress in adolescents. Methods: the study was conducted at a public school in Sinop-MT, Brazil. A total of 33 adolescents aged 14 to 16 years were included. Blood pressure was measured, a health and socioeconomic questionnaire was applied, and blood samples were collected. Blood samples were analyzed for IgG and IgM antibodies against CMV, and oxidative stress was evaluated through tests for catalase, carbonylated proteins, GST, and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Data were organized and analyzed using Graph Pad Instat 8, assessing correlations between CMV, blood pressure, overweight, and oxidative stress in adolescence. Results: of the 33 samples analyzed, 72.7% (n=24) were female, 15.1% (n=5) of the adolescents were overweight, and 18.1% (n=6) had altered blood pressure. Regarding CMV-specific antibody levels, 18.1% (n=6) tested positive for CMV IgM, and 91% (n=30) tested positive for CMV IgG. Conclusions: based on these results, we suggest that the studied adolescents presented a high prevalence of past CMV infection. The high concentration of antibodies, and indirectly the presence of the virus, may contribute to reduced antioxidant defense and metabolic alterations.
