Investigations of technical complaints resulting from anesthesia failures

In this work, laboratory tests were conducted to assess the quality of drug products containing lidocaine hydrochloride or bupivacaine hydrochloride mentioned in technical complaints of ineffectiveness in anesthesia, comprising 15 samples sent by health surveillance services of Brazilian states and municipalities between the years 2013 and 2021.The products were analyzed according to the procedures described in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia regarding physical-chemical quality parameters, including the appearance, volume and pH of the compositions, identification and quantification of drugs by high-performance liquid chromatography and quantification of glucose by polarimetry. The drug products demonstrated compliance with the quality criteria, leading to a more in-depth critical analysis of the issues related to local and regional anesthesia. Several technical aspects that can be investigated have been discussed here and should be taken into account in cases of suspected anesthetic ineffectiveness
