Perspectives about a hospital discharge planning extension program according to nursing students

Abstract

Nursing training goes through challenges to meet the new sociodemographic conditions of the population, and the need to reduce costs in public health systems depends on strategies that reduce patient returns to the hospital environment, as well as provide subsidies for continuity of care. Treatment in the post-discharge period, among the possible nursing strategies, hospital discharge planning stands out. This study aimed to analyze the perspectives of nursing students about their insertion in a hospital discharge planning extension program. Study with a qualitative approach with a descriptive character, using the anthropological concept of educational culture and the narrative technique to present the participants' reports. This was developed in December 2018, with 21 nursing students. For the analysis, the deductive thematic analysis technique was used, and the theme "Hospital discharge planning: transcending traditional knowledge and practices'' was produced from the participants' reports. Hospital discharge, contributing to professional training, sensitizing them to the importance of promoting health and carrying out educational activities according to the reality of each individual, in addition to demonstrating the importance of extensionist ideals in the process of training nurses, in order to contribute for comprehensive and equitable health care.
