Abstract

Epitheliotropic lymphoma presents with lesions such as erythema, nodulation, and ulceration in areas such as hairy skin, lips, and the nasal plane. Pruritus may occur, and the condition is associated with weight loss and regional lymphadenopathy. The clinical course progresses through three stages: Pre-Mycotic, characterized by alopecia and pruritus; Mycotic, with erythema and ulceration; and Tumoral/Nodular, characterized by plaques or ulcerated nodules. A 15-year-old Shih Tzu female dog was presented with lesions on the lips, vulva, and anus, initially diagnosed with histiocytoma. Cytological examinations revealed bacterial infections, and treatments such as Prednon and cleaning were prescribed. A biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of cutaneous epitheliotropic lymphoma. After a few consultations and initial treatment with chemotherapy, the dog showed progression of the lesions and overall deterioration. Treatment with Lomustine and Prednisolone was prescribed, but the owner discontinued the medication on her own. With the progression of the lesions and lack of adherence to treatment, it was discussed that the disease had no cure, only control. On December 6, the owner chose euthanasia due to the dog’s lack of quality of life. The treatment was hindered by factors such as the owner's lack of commitment, financial difficulties, the animal's comorbidities, and the aggressiveness of the lymphoma. The absence of adequate veterinary follow-up and limitations in available therapeutic options also negatively impacted the treatment's effectiveness. These aspects should be considered to improve the management of cutaneous epitheliotropic lymphoma in dogs.
