Abstract

Aging is a natural, dynamic, gradual, and irreversible process in the development of the individual, involving psychological, biological, and social factors. According to estimates by the IBGE, people over 65 years of age will account for more than a quarter of Brazilians in 2060. In addition, age-related chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are expected to increase, which will have a greater impact on people's disability and dependence. This study analyzed the knowledge produced in the scientific literature on the identification of factors related to frailty and sarcopenia in elderly individuals with diabetes mellitus in the period 2013-2023. The results point to the importance of multidimensional approaches that combine lifestyle changes, physical exercise programs, nutritional interventions, and strict diabetes control. The practice of resistance activities, combined with protein supplementation and the use of drugs when necessary, has shown promise in mitigating sarcopenia. Addressing frailty and sarcopenia in older adults with T2DM requires careful monitoring by healthcare professionals and managers to ensure that preventive and therapeutic strategies are implemented effectively. Early identification and appropriate management of these conditions can significantly contribute to promoting health, maintaining autonomy, and improving the quality of life of older adults.
