Epidemiological profile of the male population living with HIV/AIDS

AIDS is a disease caused by HIV, which attacks the immune system. The term "risk group" has been replaced by "risk behaviors," such as unprotected sex and needle sharing. In Brazil, the majority of HIV cases still occur among men. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of the male population living with HIV/AIDS, correlating race-ethnicity with education level and the mode of disease transmission with sexual orientation. Methodology: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, conducted through the analysis of medical records. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, employing means for numerical variables and absolute, relative, and percentage frequencies for nominal variables. Results: A total of 270 medical records were analyzed, revealing that the population has the following characteristics: ages between 21 and 30 years, single, homosexual, of mixed race/skin color, with complete high school education, and the main mode of HIV transmission being sexual. Conclusion: There was an increase in the number of reported cases in the year 2021, the post-pandemic period, which helps outline the epidemiological profile of the disease, contributing to decisions and strategies for the situational diagnosis of the studied region. It was also found that in the male population, HIV/AIDS still predominantly affects homosexuals.
